An LTL quote is not only about the linehaul rate. Extra services and delivery conditions can create accessorial charges. If these services are not selected before booking, the invoice may be higher than the original quote.
Use this checklist before booking an LTL shipment.

1. Liftgate
A liftgate may be needed when there is no dock or forklift at pickup or delivery. If the carrier must use a liftgate but it was not requested, the charge may be added later. Ask: does the shipper/receiver have a dock or forklift?
2. Residential delivery
Residential locations usually cost more than commercial addresses. Some businesses operating from homes, storage units, or mixed-use addresses may still be rated as residential. Ask: is the location a true commercial address with normal receiving access? An address checker can help.
3. Limited access
Limited access locations can include schools, farms, churches, military sites, construction sites, trade shows, camps, and some storage facilities. Ask: is the location easy for a freight truck to access during normal business hours?
4. Appointment delivery
If the receiver requires a scheduled time, appointment fees may apply. Missed appointments can also create redelivery or storage charges — see our guide on redelivery and address change fees. Ask: does the receiver require appointment or call-ahead service?
5. Oversize or overlength freight
Long, wide, non-stackable, or awkward freight can trigger additional handling charges. Ask: is any piece over standard pallet size or non-stackable?
6. Detention or waiting time
If the driver waits too long at pickup or delivery, detention may be charged. Ask: can the shipper and receiver load/unload within the carrier free time?
7. Inside delivery or white glove
Standard LTL usually means dock-to-dock or curbside freight service. Inside delivery, room-of-choice, unpacking, or debris removal are special services. Ask: does the freight need to go inside the building?
